Let's turn the chessboard around a little bit.

Everything that the culprit has done so far has been very deliberate. No unnecessary movements, no noise in the pattern. We can assume that if they burned Valmont's shoes, it was absolutely necessary for them to do so.

Hm... maybe the culprit's hands were dirty, too? And some of it got on the shoes. That could've given it away. But I think you're on the right track, they knew that Dylan would sniff them out, and therefore burned the shoes to make his nose less effective.

But let's take things a few steps further. Nobody is infallible, and the dirt stains on the towel are fairly small. Furthermore, the culprit would have little reason to believe that the pool didn't get all the blood and dirt off them, wherever it came from, and if they had used the towel and then washed it it wouldn't have been dirty at all.

With all of this in mind, it's possible the culprit still has dirt on them.

[Yasu grimaces.]

A- Alright, um... I guess I have to ask the Little Brothers for a favor now.
