The only reasonable assumption is that Dylan took aim at someone with the PBW, missed, and hit the vending machine instead... but I doubt someone he was engaged in active combat with would've bothered to idly purchase a snack from the vending machine, and the placement of the chips suggests that they dropped it when they were attacked.
Was Dylan the one to start the fight?
I doubt he had any intention of actually murdering anyone, but based on what we know right now, that's the only reasonable explanation for this part of the scene, at least in my view. So why...?
