If we imagine Kakuya's actions as moves in a game, it seems as if most of her strategy has centered around taking pieces from Utsushiyo and bringing them to Kakuriyo. All of us arriving in Kakuriyo, likely by dying, is probably her victory condition.
So, the inverse is likely true for us. Once we have all of our pieces in Utsushiyo, Kakuya will be massively set back even if we don't win outright. I'm inclined to believe that getting everyone back will be the key here... including the piece that began the game on her side of the board.
