Maybe I'm thinking about the coif and silhouette wrong. It's possible that Thomasin was attacked in the hallway and her coif fell off, the red paint was involved somehow—maybe she ducked?—and she ran off to the workshop. While she was grabbing the tools to defend herself with, the culprit caught her by surprise and shoved her, breaking her neck.
