WEEK 3

All three deaths last were tragic in their own ways. Was trust so fragile in that castle that a simple misunderstanding could end in blood? It seemed to be the case. The trial proved that without a doubt. Surely no one else would make that mistake again. As another week begins the tea cup elevator has granted access to a new area. Maybe the new amusements of a festival will ease your wounded hearts?

[It's time for week three! We're almost half-way done with our trip in the castle. Don't forget to submit your memories here and your activity here. Even though, the Queen seems to be a little more steady on her feet you can find her and the other Alice at the audience hall. As always, don't forget to submit your comments for fabulous prizes.]

[ Looking over the timeline... ]

This definitely helps clarify some things... was this something you found in Miki's room?

[Oriko nods.] I'm not sure how much use it will be to us now, but I appreciate having some more perspective on the previous game.

[Just like with Nigel, she slides the photograph with the typewritten text on it across to him.]

I've yet to learn more about this third chess piece, however.

[ Looks... ]

Ah... There was one of those in Ninagawa's room too. "Will you forget everything or will you be forgotten?"

[ He didn't have anything to take a picture with, and he doesn't have the note pieces on him now, but he remembers it well enough. ]

It sounded like a threat, and given the way the paper was ripped in half, I think she took it as one too.

[Actually the photograph isn't hers; whatever's typed seems to be on the back of picture with Sayaka herself in it. But the text is more important than the image, so she's been leading with that. Also she doesn't want to look at Madoka.]

Sayaka Miki-san seems to have taken it as a threat, as well--that someone else would act.

It was never about the other victims in this case.

[ you know i totally read that in the investigation thread when it happened and then i blanked out on all context tonight

Anyway, this is definitely interesting. ]

Does that mean there are certain people whose deaths they have more of an investment in than others? Or were they just trying to ensure that they got more than the minimum two deaths out of this?

[ He guesses either way could potentially be used as a method for maximizing the magical energy received in a given week, if that's the kind of thing they're after, but it also limits how many weeks of cases they can have, and he'd been under the impression before that they were interested in stretching the game out as long as possible. ]

It had been such a long time since anyone felt compelled to act. If it was too long, would the Forest consume everyone before the goal could be met?

[As soon as she speaks, however, Oriko pauses, thinks over what she just said, then paces back and forth a few steps. It helps her think, work out some of that nervous energy.]

I haven't heard any mention of Queen Alice-san from the previous round of this "game," though. Can you recall one?
strictura: (but you're so smart)

[personal profile] strictura 2020-10-25 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't. After the information about that room with no nameplate that opened up with the bookmark, I'd been wondering if maybe the Alices had been presenting themselves as normal participants in the last round, or maybe just Queen Alice while the Cat took on a different form and played the part of the game overseer -- possibly the Storyteller -- alone.

[ He is just saying that having one twin as the mastermind and the other secretly within the ranks of the game's participants is not unheard of. ]

I guess another possibility is that the Queen was asleep throughout much of that round while the Cat ran things on her own... maybe she's only been able to stay active as long we've known her because of whatever power she got from all those lives before.

I see... [Oriko goes a little wide-eyed; she takes back the Storyteller's typewritten note and looks it over again.] I thought it might be a third party because it sounds nothing like the Alice-san who is a cat, but it could just not sound like her because she took a different form.

[That she might have missed such an obvious possibility... it's so frustrating. She clenches a fist, setting down the photograph in disgust.]

It would make sense if that were the case. I've noticed that she is retaining energy exponentially following each death... In a few weeks, I don't even know what we should expect.
strictura: (and maybe it's wise)

[personal profile] strictura 2020-10-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's just a theory, and it still could be a third party... but from Allen's description, it sounded like she described them as "someone like her" without ever actually saying that it wasn't her.

[ And if it wasn't, he's not sure what benefit there could be to her implying otherwise. ]

I don't know what to expect either, though. I suppose in a best case scenario the Queen having more of a presence might help rein in the Cat's worst impulses, but...

[ Who knows, really. ]

In the worst-case scenario, we outlive our usefulness before that can happen.

[She wouldn't be this blunt with just any of the children, but she doesn't think she needs to mince words around him.]
strictura: (when they know that damn well)

[personal profile] strictura 2020-10-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Given that we seem to be more useful to them dead than alive in the first place...

[ That one seems a lot more likely. ]

[personal profile] prescience 2020-10-26 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
[She clenches her back teeth. They probably don't have the time to stall that the previous round did.]

I think Queen Alice-san is beginning to understand the real outcome of the game, and she isn't completely comfortable with it.

But do you convince her, simply, to stop? What child can hear the words "you no longer deserve to be alive" and accept them? I doubt it can be argued at all.
strictura: (there's no room for promotions)

[personal profile] strictura 2020-10-26 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's like I've said before: Even if she's not comfortable with it, she always knew what she was doing. She already weighed her options and determined that killing us was an acceptable means for achieving her wish. I'd think our only shot at convincing her to stop would probably be for us to convince her that her wish itself was wrong, and that doesn't seem likely either.

She surely thought that, if the dead could be revived, it would undo the harm done... But I do not believe that merely returning from the dead can reverse what it is like to have been dead.

[And...after the trial the next day he might understand what she says here a little better, but hindsight is 20/20, isn't it?]

... If she understands the fault in that now, it might be different, but besides that, I agree with you. There really is no "talking this out."
