WEEK ONE

This week, students at Ira Academy must return to class with their memories of the weekend hanging over them. The Principal is watching now, and he dislikes children even more than his initial draconian idea of education led everyone to believe. The rules revision is probably at the forefront of most people’s minds, along with the sinking paranoia of being monitored much more closely and more severely reprimanded for stepping out of line. This very empty academy building suddenly feels all the more claustrophobic. All students now have the option to commit murder and be freed from this school. Less than a week ago, you were teaching yourself to be friends with some of your fellow classmates. Will things remain that way, or will someone reveal themselves to be willing to take a life to escape?

But just because murder’s on the table doesn’t mean that your studies are off of it, and the Little Brothers are still here to helpfully encourage all students to complete their coursework. Despite being shepherded away at the end of the school dance announcement last night, this week the Prefect will be back for her office hours and, thankfully, less fixated on pulling off a successful weekend spelling bee and social event. Less thankfully, it seems she believes that completing your re-education as originally planned is the correct course of action. You’d do well to remember, perhaps, that right now your success reflects ultimately on her. Students who prefer to see how their fellow school denizen and prisoner-in-spirit can also sneak into the music room whenever it’s unoccupied to converse with A.

To that end, it also looks like someone’s posted a “Tutors and Study Groups” sign-up sheet on the hallway walls outside the A/V room. There are illustrated descriptions next to it, so even someone who doesn’t understand the writing should be able to glean its purpose. This seems like a good way for people who are interested in working together or helping one another with anything involved in school life. Students may make use of this resource as they will.

Finally, at the end of the hallway near the music room, a sliding wall has receded as if it was never there in the first place, revealing an unexplored area on this floor.. Hmm, what could be up there?

Welcome to Week 1! As with last week, if you have anything you’d like to investigate, you can bring mod responses in by pinging (INVESTIGATION) in your subject line. (SHEEP) for the Little Brothers. Unlike last week, Nanami can also be invited to participate in your threads with a (PREFECT) call-out. This is an option for anyone who wants non-private/event convos with her, if for some reason anyone wants to spend MORE time with her. If you are looking for information about the school’s mysteries, it's highly recommended you bring in the sheep or the mod journal instead!

We can do that. The Principal only told us that we can’t, y’know, stop anyone from… you know. We can make sure things stay, uh, fair, though.

[Reika does not read/watch enough science fiction to immediately think of AI, but she's been paying attention in meetings and knows about roboticization, and it turns out sometimes two wrongs do make a right in a general sense.]

I think Nanami is brainwashed. Is, not was. She reacted very strangely on Saturday, when I was speaking to her.

[He could argue, but he won't. Instead he watches to see what happens to Sonic, if anything does, as he climbs the fence.]

I completely agree that it is utter folly to dismiss Mistress Prefect as cold-hearted or a fool. I approached her for academic advice on Friday, and her answers were paced oddly. It was as if she could not fully shake off her past order to make us peacefully complete class together.

[Edward only shakes his head a little, not really a denial, but wanting to add.]

There's more than that.

I've been... working on her, I suppose, since the first day, and I'm almost sure that I've had some kind of effect. On Saturday, after The Announcement, I tried again to show her the errors in logic in the story she's been fed, and what she's been working for. She almost collapsed, and held her head as though she had a headache. The sheep removed her afterwards.

For a moment it looked like her mind was trying to shut down. What I was telling her was logical, and I think she knew that it was, but she couldn't seem to be able to handle thinking about it.

It was arrogant to assume that because so many of us supposedly woke up at the same time that there's no way someone could have been held under. Maybe that even explains some of the dampening of abilities that several of us have mentioned. Maybe they are lingering effects of mind control as well.

Regardless, I do not think Nanami is in control of herself. I've been trying to get her to offer any help she's able to, and I may still be able to do so, but I'm less certain of success in that case.

She certainly seems oddly accepting of an obviously abnormal situation.

Though the fact that she was able to oppose the Principal at all suggests the brainwashing's hold on her mind is incomplete.

[Edward sees Sonic normally. Things don't seem very different on his end but, uh. He probably definitely senses that some very hungry things might be waking up because of that?]

People here have come from what appears to be a number of starkly different realities, and so it seems possible that there might be one where this would not be so abnormal as it appears to the rest of us. But her reaction when her behavior and assumptions were questioned were very strange.

That is a good point, however. Of course, it's also possible that the hold on her mind is incomplete intentionally. I can't imagine mindless puppets make for the best hired help. Perhaps she was subjected to a different form of control than the rest of the students. Maybe that's why it still has a hold on her.

That would seem appropriate for her position. A somewhat more autonomous leader to give the mindless followers direction.

On the other hand, we only have a vague idea of what we were like under brainwashing. It may be that our mental states were similar to hers, and we'd have had behaved similarly if anyone had been there to question our assumptions.
